CDM - Construction Design & Management 2015

Know your roles and responsibilities under the changes to CDM 2015.
The new regulations make clear the responsibilities of domestic clients commissioning work
on their own homes or those of a family member.

DIY work does not fall within CDM.
The regulations put CDM duties on commercial clients in full whilst passing the responsibility of CDM in domestic projects to the principcal designer i.e. your Architect
or to the principal contractor.

Planning success in Hale.

theCAVE architecture + design have been granted detailed planning consent for a contemporary home in Hale, Cheshire.
The contemporary design is balanced by the specification of solid natural slate walls. The house provides modern living spaces including a large kitchen, family room and dining area, formal lounge, home cinema, study, integral garage and 6 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
The house is predominantly glazed on the rear elevation which allows the interior spaces to flow seamlessly into the large rear garden.
Deep overhanging eaves provide solar shade to the interior spaces. The detail design process is now under way and work is scheduled to commence in early 2015.


We're on the move

theCAVE architecture + design are moving to new premises early August 2015.
With a need for expansion we have secured a new studio space at No.12 George Street Alderley Edge.

We are excited about the move and look forward to welcoming both our existing and future clients into our new space.

Changes to Approved Documents - Part L

Building Regulations apply to most new buildings and many alterations of existing buildings in England and Wales, whether for domestic, commercial and industrial use.
Compliance is a legal requirement.

Following the consultation carried out in 2012, the Department for Communities and Local Government has announced changes to the Building Regulations in England.

Sunday Times Feature Sleepy Hollow

We are delighted to see that Sleepy Hollow, the £3.95m Eco-Mansion we designed for Hillcrest Homes has been listed amongst the Sunday Times Top 50 Homes in Britain. The 10,000 sq ft private residence in Presbury, Cheshire was listed under the category "Top Properties for Design"


King of the Castle

theCAVE architecture + design have celebrated Barrie Jones' Ultra running win at the 2013 Grim Reaper Ultra Marathon held this month at Grimsthorpe Castle.
Barrie ran 70 miles in an astounding 11hrs 15 mins seeing him cross the line some 1hr 15mins before the second place running. We wish Barrie continued success andare proud to sponsor his ultra running efforts.


Modernist Permission in Prestbury

theCAVE architecture + design are delighted to announce that we have gained full detailed planning consent for a modernist house in the centre of Prestbury, Cheshire.
The application was determined by the local planning authority using delegated powers. The private house sits into a sloping site on Springfields, below the grade II listed Butley Hall which is currently under renovation. The house utilises a green roof to reduce the visual impact on views from the listed hall down to the Prestbury Conservation Area. The scheme was intentionally contemporary in its design to make a clear statement and is not an apologetic pastiche. It is a efficient building designed for modern living and it reflects this clearly in the architectural style. Renewable energy sources such a ground source heat pump will be used to heat and cool the property whilst minimising the carbon footprint of this unique private dwelling.


New commission

theCAVE are delighted to have been appointed by a private client to design a new build, contemporary, replacement dwelling house in Hale, Cheshire. We look forward to working with the client on this exciting project. Revisit for regular updates.


Planning Success In Bramhall

theCAVE architecture + design have achieved planning permission for a new build private dwelling in Bramhall. The scheme was designed for Hillcrest Homes and continues the modernist theme of the recently completed Sleepy Hollow project in Prestbury. The development provides accommodation on a single level in a contemporary, pavilion style house. The overhanging eaves and copper roof appears to flat above the house and provides shading and privacy to the interior. Work is due to start on site in 2013. Sleepy Hollow Nominated - LABC Building Excellence Awards.

We are pleased to announce that Sleepy Hollow, the 10,000 sq. ft. Eco-Mansion theCAVE designed for Hillcrest Homes has been nominated as a finalist in the Local Authority Building Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards. The event will be held on the 26th of April at the De Vere Whites, Bolton.


Winners Announced !

In October 2012, theCAVE architecture + design held the inaugural CAVE cup at Mottram Hall Golf Course. The day saw 24 golfers take on the challenging course. Prizes were awarded for longest drive, nearest the pin and the overall high score. We are pleased to announce the winners. Nearest the pin was John Atkinson who has scooped a Weekend away in an award winning lodge retreat set in the Yorkshire Dales, courtesy of - A deft performance by Christopher Robinson resulted in him winning the competition with the best over all score. The 18th hole staged the battle for longest drive. Christopher out-drove the competition to win a meal for two at We would like to extend our thanks to all those who took part and look forward to next year. Christopher Robinson was awarded coveted CAVE cup at the prize giving following the competition and is now custodian for the coming year.



Sleepy Hollow, the contemporary eco-mansion we designed for Cheshire based developer Hillcrest Homes has been shortlisted for two design awards by a judging panel that includes Sir Terence Conran, Wayne Hemingway MBE, Geoff Alsop and George Clarke. The Northern Design Awards are an annual celebration of best in class design for the residential and commercial property sector, and interior and landscaping design.

Sleepy Hollow has been shortlisted in two categories: ‘Best Innovative Design’ and ‘Best Luxury Property £1m+'
The awards will be held at Manchester Central at the end of this month (30 Nov), and will be hosted by Wayne Hemingway MBE.

Progress - on the EDGE

Work is progressing well on site at theEDGE, Staffordshire. This view looks back toward the living room and home office from the kitchen. All steelwork is now erected. theEDGE takes advantage of a ground source heat pump to deliver heating and cooling of the house throughout the year. In the absence of mains gas supply the installation of a ground source heat pump is simply the most economical solution. theEDGE provides accommodation on 2 levels with 5 bedrooms all with en-suite facilities, home cinema, pool, office, kitchen, dining hall and family room. Grand Union Grueller

On the 2nd June 2012 Barrie Jones our sponsored ultra runner began a gruelling 145mile run from London to Birmingham tracing the path of the Historic Grand Union Canal. Barrie ran through the night to complete the race in an astonishing 31hrs 23mins and placed 6th out of 90 competitors. The race is considered to be Britain's longest, toughest non-stop running race. Barrie continues to push the boundaries of Ultra running to support the efforts of the Autistic Society, our elected charity.


Crane your neck

Last week delivery of wide span, pre cambered concrete floor units to the mixed use development in Crumpsall, Manchester took place. The massive units were delivered progressively throughout the morning and were lifted into position one by one. The 400mm deep floor has been designed to span between the outer walls, a distance of 16m without intermediate support. The residential units above will be constructed from this plinth. The development takes advantage of an excellent commuter location just yards away from Eccles Metrolink station. Completion is projected for Autumn 2012.


Contemporary Extension & Refurbishment - Wilmslow

Work progresses at Hollyoak, Oneoak Lane in Wilmslow. This week sees the roof re covered with Slate and the preparation work for the integrated Photovoltaic Array done. The Photovoltaic (PV) array has been installed using a detail developed by theCAVE to modify the standard installation to set the array flush with the slate roof covering. The first floor aluminium windows have been fitted and the large sliding doors are due for delivery to site this coming week. With the building set to be water tight within the next two weeks work is set to begin on the interior very soon.


Victory for our sponsored athlete Barry Jones

With 2012 being the biggest year of sport ever in the run up to London 2012, theCAVE have gotten behind local athlete Barry Jones. theCAVE architecture + design sponsored hyper-runner Barry in his latest even which saw him clinch 1st place overall after a two day event. Barry Jones has entered some of the most gruelling running challenges imaginable and all proceeds from his efforts have been donated to the Autistic Society.


Planning Success in St Helens

theCAVE architecture + design have been granted detailed planning consent for 11 family homes in St Helens. Working alongside Henderson Homes, theCAVE have created a masterplan for 11 detached and semi detached town houses on the site of the former Rutland Veterinary Hospital. Henderson Homes plan to take the project on site later this year.


Planning Win - The Edge, Staffordshire

theCAVE have secured planning permission for a cutting edge, contemporary family home on Oulton Heath, Staffordshire. The house has been designed for a private client seeking a modern home for their family. theCAVE won planning permission for the 6500sq ft mega house which replaces a modest, vacant detached house. The application was called to committee due to local interest and after careful consideration was approved with 9 votes to 1 in favour of the development. The Edge provides 6 bedrooms on three floors with home cinema, swimming pool and spa, a large kitchen and family room, formal living room and study along with double height dining hall and gallery. Second Consecutive Win For theCAVE

theCAVE returned to Hollywood Bowl, Bolton to scoop first place at the Lancashire Tile & Brick Bowling Competition. Each year Architecture firms from across the North West compete for the coveted trophy. After a less than perfect first round theCAVE romped home to clinch the win some 50 points clear of the second place team. Dan Spencer representing theCAVE scored 209 to secure the highest individual score in the history of the event. theCAVE would like to thank all those at Lancashire Tile & Brick for their hospitality and another great event.


Planning consent

theCAVE architecture + design have secured detailed planning consent to extend and remodel a private, family residence in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Work begins on site January 2012.
The existing house will be extended to the front and rear providing large open plan spaces at ground and first floor. A contemporary material palette with simple geometry creates a contemporary yet context driven dwelling which is cradled by a wealth of mature tree species.


New Appointment

theCAVE have been appointed by a private client to extend and re-model an existing detached property in Wilmslow.
The house occupies an exceptional, leafy site within green belt and is considered an area of outstanding landscape value.
theCAVE were approached by their new client following sight of designs for Sleepy Hollow, an existing project under construction in Prestbury, and were further prompted by a positive recommendation from Hillcrest Homes.


1st annual Karting Event

On Thurs 21st July, theCAVE ran its first annual endurance karting event at Three Sisters Race Circuit in Wigan.
Teams competed in a 2 hr race following practice and qualifying.
A combination of tidy driving and cunning strategy saw theCAVE team take the chequered flag for 1st place.

Sleepy Hollow Start on site

Work continues on site in Prestbury as Hillcrest Homes begin construction of their latest mega house on Castle Hill. The property is to be complete by Spring 2012 and will provide 5 bedrooms including master and guest suite, home cinema, games room and swimming pool with steam room and gymnasium. We will be posting progress photos as the project takes shape.

theCAVE recently sponsored Barrie Jones in his epic 100 mile marathon. Barrie covered the incomprehensible distance in a little over 19 hours to take 4th place in his first competitive race. Our utmost respect goes to Barrie for his amazing achievement and we we're proud to support him and his efforts for the Autistic Society.

theCAVE were delighted to lift the trophy for the Lancashire Brick + Tile annual ten pin bowling competition. Amidst fierce competition the team romped home to an emphatic victory.
With the final scores in theCAVE took first place with more than 200 clear points. The winning score set a 10 year record for the event and saw us return to theCAVE with an impressive trophy.


theCAVE appointed by longest established house builder in Northwest

theCAVE is delighted to be working with the Northwest's longest established house builder. We were recently appointed by Henderson Homes to gain permission to build 11 family homes in St Helens. The site of the former Rutland Veterinary Hospital is to be transformed into 11 affordable, family homes. We look forward to building our working relationship with Henderson Homes and achieving planning permission for the site this year.
